It was “Risshun (the first day of spring)” in Japan, but it was the coldest ever!!! There is huge cold front hanging over from the north, and bringing lots of snow in many parts of Japan. There is no snow in Ishigaki, but definitely the coldest condition I ever experienced! But there were lots of mantas around Kuroshima today, and the dives were great!
A big Mantis Shrimp was showing off its beautiful body on the reef of Taketomi, looking as if it was staring at something…
It was a Giant Cuttlefish. We have not seen spawning around here, and this one was coming to check around for places to lay eggs 🙂
After the warm-up dive around Taketomi, we cruised down to Kuroshima area. Water temperature around Ishigaki is usually not too different between the surface and the bottom, but today we could see thermocline clearly… and the bottom water was really cold!
But the visibility was fantastic in the cold water. You could almost see through the body of a Harlequin Ghost Pipefish.
When we were about to go back to the boat, there were three mantas passing under us!
After the lunch break with hot meal, we went down for one more dive today. When we saw the fins of Mantas around the surface, we couldn’t wait! Everyone enjoyed watching their elegant swim for a long time! There also was a Green Turtle joining the dance 🙂
Let’s go back and take a hot bath!!
See you tomorrow!!
